Build Review of LEGO Icons How to Train Your Dragon - Toothless (10375)
If, like us, you've loved Toothless since his first appearance in 2010's How to Train Your Dragon (or even since the original novel was published in 2003), then this set has probably got you pretty excited.
At 784 pieces, it's not the biggest or most complicated build, yet it's aimed at ages 18 and over. That's probably because, although you can pose the head, jaw, tail and wings, this is not really a toy, and is more intended as part of a How to Train Your Dragon LEGO display.
That's absolutely fine, but it does mean that the finished set needs to capture the art style and/or the spirit of the character. Let's dive into the build process and find out how well LEGO Toothless 10375 does that.
What's the build process like?

LEGO do a great job of working with IP owners to make sure their movie, TV and videogame tie-ins are up to scratch. In this case, the LEGO Icons design team collaborated with NBCUniversal to faithfully reproduce Toothless in brick form.
And... first impressions are, they did really well. The character is instantly recognisable by his repaired tail, but also just by looking at his face. It's a really expressive set, with fun features, such as a tongue that follows the face as you move it from side to side.
The design team say in the building instructions: "We hope building this set feels like YOU are meeting Toothless for the first time!" Honestly, yes, it does.
Our impressions of the build
We always prefer it when the build process 'grows' the character from the bottom up and the middle out - it just feels more organic that way.
LEGO Icons 10375 Toothless follows a fairly logical path: torso, front feet, back spikes, rear feet, head, tail and wings. It definitely has that 'up and out' feeling, versus building the wings and legs first and setting them aside until later.
There's a point early on where it looks a bit like you're building Dark Bowser, but once the head is on there with its big eyes and bleppy tongue, there's no doubt that you're well on your way to completing Toothless and gaining a new companion.
What are the problem points?
Despite the 18+ age tag on this one, LEGO How to Train Your Dragon Toothless (10375) is not too challenging to build, which might be a problem point if you're looking to get stuck into some really complex advanced build techniques.
Most of the detail work is in the head, so it's perhaps not super easy to 'see' Toothless emerging until quite late in the build, but it all comes together nicely at the end. The translucent 'plasma blast' accessory is a fantastic finishing touch.
Like some other recent releases, we found some of the bricks had minor moulding errors, with ragged edges that had not been trimmed. It really shouldn't be necessary to clean these up with sandpaper or a craft knife, so we're hoping this is a short-term manufacturing problem and not a sign that standards are slipping at LEGO.
Final thoughts
The finished LEGO Icons How to Train Your Dragon Toothless (10375) is a really excellent effort to catch the personality of the character, with a fairly authentic recreation of the art style from the animated movies. It is instantly recognisable as Toothless.
At 784 pieces, this is a medium-complexity build. The over-18 age group seems a bit high, and I'd imagine experienced LEGO builders aged 12 and up would have no problems assembling the set single-handedly.
It is a very cute and quirky model when it's done, and we loved perching Toothless in different places around the house and garden, as if he'd just landed there to eat a fish. For the price, it's an excellent LEGO display set with a straightforward but satisfying build process.
Our Build Rating: 8.5/10
